Why Our Muslin Squares Get Softer With Every Wash

Our muslin squares are made with 100% cotton muslin, printed here in the UK — often through the same designer collaborations and fabric sourcing behind our signature scalloped bibs. They're generously sized for burping, swaddling, and everyday newborn mess, and unlike most fabrics, they don't wear thin with washing — they get noticeably softer. That combination of real provenance and a fabric that improves with age is what keeps parents reaching for the same few muslins on repeat.

Printed in the UK, often by the same hands as our bibs

Every Monica & Me muslin square is made with 100% cotton muslin, printed in the UK. For our special and exclusive prints, we usually work with a UK-based designer — the same approach we take with the fabrics behind our bibs, rather than sourcing prints off the shelf.

It's why you'll sometimes notice a muslin print that looks familiar — because it is. If a muslin's fabric matches one of our Liberty of London bibs, that print was printed in the UK exclusively for Monica & Me, from the same sourcing relationship. It's not a coincidence and it's not a lower-tier reprint — it's the same fabric story, just cut into a different shape for a different job.

Gets softer with every wash

Most fabrics wear out the more you wash them. Muslin cotton does the opposite. The more our muslin squares go through the wash, the softer they become — the weave relaxes and the cotton opens up, so a muslin that's been through fifty washes feels noticeably gentler against a baby's skin than one straight out of the packet.

That's not a workaround for a fabric that frays or bobbles with age — it's the actual point of muslin as a textile, and it's why we chose it. A newborn muslin isn't meant to stay pristine in a drawer. It's meant to be washed, used, and washed again, getting better at its job with every cycle. Whatever stage you're at with a muslin — brand new, or six months of daily use in — the wash is doing you a favour, not damaging the fabric.

Where a muslin square actually earns its keep

Muslin squares are one of the few newborn items that pull double and triple duty:

  • Burping — draped over the shoulder, absorbent enough for the mess that follows a feed.
  • Swaddling — lightweight and breathable, so it wraps without overheating a newborn.
  • Everyday newborn mess — spit-up, dribble, a changing mat cover, a car seat shade — the jobs that come up a dozen times a day and need a fabric that's soft against skin and easy to throw straight in the wash.

Most parents end up keeping several in rotation, precisely because they're washed so often — which, as above, only improves them.

A few common questions

What are Monica & Me muslin squares made from?
100% cotton muslin, printed in the UK — often using the same UK-based designer prints and fabric sourcing as our signature scalloped bibs.

Do muslin squares get worse with washing?
No — the opposite. Muslin cotton softens with every wash, so the fabric actually improves with use rather than wearing out.

The Best Baby Bibs for Boys — Our Customers' Favourites

Katie & Millie Neutral, Poppy Sky Blue and Theo Blue are the three prints our customers come back for, again and again, when they're buying for a baby boy. All three are made on our signature scalloped edge, in genuine Liberty of London fabric — it isn't the shape that makes them boy favourites, it's the colourway and the print itself. Here's what makes each one work so well, and where to look if you'd rather have a square or bandana shape instead.

Katie & Millie Neutral

The Katie & Millie Neutral is the one we'd reach for first if we only had to pick one. It's Liberty's Katie & Millie print in warm, earthy browns rather than the softer pastels the same print comes in elsewhere — a small floral that reads as genuinely gender-neutral rather than defaulting to blue, which is exactly why so many parents of boys choose it. It sits comfortably with cream, khaki and denim, so it doesn't fight with the rest of a newborn's wardrobe the way a bolder print sometimes can.

Poppy Sky Blue

The Poppy Sky Blue is a blue-on-blue poppy and daisy print — soft and tonal rather than the classic pink, green and blue Liberty ditsy most people picture. It's a print that started life as a florals-lover's pick and has become one of our most popular choices among parents of boys specifically, because the blue-on-blue colourway lets a floral feel appropriate without needing to be muted down or paired back. It's proof that a floral print doesn't have to skip a boy's wardrobe — it just has to be the right blue.

Theo Blue

The Theo Blue takes the Theo print — animals and foliage on a Liberty ground — into a deeper, more classic blue. Of the three, it's the one that reads most immediately as "for a boy" at a glance, and it's a strong pick for anyone buying a first bib without knowing the rest of the nursery's palette. It layers easily with the other two if you're building a small starter set rather than buying just one.

Prefer a square or bandana shape?

Our scalloped edge is the signature shape and where these three prints currently live, but square and bandana bibs do come through the workroom too, and — as we've said elsewhere — they're especially popular with parents of baby boys. The honest reason they sell out quickly isn't hype: we make everything in small batches, so a square or bandana run in a boy-friendly print is often a handful of pieces, not a restocked line. If you want one, the best approach is to check the For Boys collection regularly rather than waiting for an announcement — by the time a piece is back in stock publicly, it's often close to gone again. Worth noting too: the popularity of Katie & Millie Neutral, Poppy Sky Blue and Theo Blue shows the shape isn't really the deciding factor for most parents — it's the print and colourway doing the work, on a scalloped bib or otherwise.

A couple of questions we get asked about these three

Are Katie & Millie Neutral, Poppy Sky Blue and Theo Blue only available as scalloped bibs?

Currently, yes — all three are made on our signature scalloped edge. They're boy favourites because of the print and colourway, not because the shape has changed, so if you love one of these but want a square or bandana style, it's worth keeping an eye on the For Boys collection for other prints in that shape.

Can I have one of these personalised?

Yes — Katie & Millie Neutral, Poppy Sky Blue and Theo Blue can all be personalised the same way as any of our bibs, with a name, initials or short phrase embroidered on, in a thread colour matched to the print.

Ready to see them for yourself? Shop Katie & Millie Neutral, Poppy Sky Blue and Theo Blue individually, or browse the full For Boys collection to see what else is in stock. If you're deciding between our scalloped shape and a square or bandana style more generally, our piece on scalloped vs regular baby bibs covers the difference in full.

Christmas Gift Guide: Heirloom Baby Bibs & Personalised Keepsakes

A good heirloom Christmas gift here is one that's still being used long after the wrapping paper's gone — a bib or bodysuit made from fabric chosen to survive hundreds of washes, in a print or a name that makes it that baby's, not just a baby's. We don't have a dedicated Christmas print this year, so rather than chase something seasonal and short-lived, we're pointing you towards the pieces that already do this best: our hero gift sets, and a personalisation detail that turns an everyday piece of baby clothing into something kept.

The gift sets to start with

If you want one thing to arrive under the tree that covers a newborn properly, our two hero sets are still the ones we'd point you to. The Eloise Set is three bibs in classic pink, blue and green ditsy florals — the safe, versatile choice when you're not sure of the parents' taste, or you want something that will suit any nursery it lands in. The Rainbow Set is seven coordinated bibs, one for every day of the week, for the parent who wants colour and pattern rather than neutrals — a full starter wardrobe in bibs, and a generous gift on its own under the tree.

Both work as Christmas gifts for the same reason they work as baby shower gifts: they're not a single throwaway item, they're a small wardrobe. Arriving wrapped from the Heirloom Baby Sets collection, either set reads as considered without any extra effort on your part. We wrote more about how to choose between them, and how to match a gift to the parent rather than a rule, in our gifting guide.

A personalised bodysuit — a Christmas-specific idea

New this season on our side: our Peter Pan collar baby bodysuits, part of the Baby Clothing collection, can now be personalised too — monogramming or embroidery on the left chest, the same considered placement you'd expect on a keepsake piece. It's a cute detail for baby, and it's a nice way to give something Christmas-specific without it being a novelty print that's out of place by January: a first name, initials, or a birth date, stitched onto a piece that's built to actually be worn, not just photographed once and put away.

It sits alongside our existing bespoke monogramming on bibs — same idea, same three fonts, now on a new piece. If you haven't personalised with us before, our step-by-step guide to personalising a bib covers exactly how the process works; a bodysuit follows the same steps from its own product page. Full details on what's available to personalise, and how, are also on our personalisation page.

A note on Christmas order deadlines

We haven't set this year's Christmas order cut-off dates yet — it's still a little early for that. As always, we'll publish exact deadlines for standard and personalised orders on our Christmas order dates page once they're confirmed, so it's worth checking back there closer to the time rather than assuming a date. If you're planning to personalise a gift, in particular, that page is the one to bookmark.

FAQ

Is there a Christmas-specific print or collection this year?

Not this year — we don't have a dedicated Christmas collection. Instead, our hero gift sets (the Eloise Set and the Rainbow Set) and our personalised pieces, including the newly personalisable Peter Pan collar bodysuits, work well as heirloom Christmas gifts without needing a seasonal print.

When do I need to order by for Christmas?

We haven't confirmed this year's cut-off dates yet. Check our Christmas order dates page closer to the time — we always publish exact deadlines for standard and personalised orders there once they're set.

Ready to choose? Browse the Heirloom Baby Sets for the Eloise and Rainbow sets, take a look at the Baby Clothing collection to see the Peter Pan collar bodysuits, and read our gifting guide for more on matching a gift to the parent. Scalloped Edge vs Regular Baby Bibs: What's the Difference?

A regular bib is a flat, shaped piece of fabric on a strap. A scalloped-edge bib is cut differently on purpose: the curved, wave-edged hem follows the line of a baby's chest and shoulders, so it lies flat instead of bunching up under the chin, and it runs a little longer at the sides for extra coverage across the shoulders and lower chest — exactly where the mess happens. It's a small change to the pattern piece that changes how the bib actually behaves in daily use, not just how it looks in a photo.

Made to survive the wash, not just the photo

A bib goes through more laundry than almost anything else in a baby's wardrobe, sometimes daily for months on end. That's why the fabric behind our scalloped bibs is chosen specifically to withstand endless wash cycles without the bib losing its shape. A scalloped edge that goes limp, curls, or loses its crisp line after a handful of washes isn't really doing its job — ours is built to hold its structure wear after wear, not just for the first few.

If you want yours looking especially sharp — for a christening, a family photo, or simply because — here's a bit of insider advice from the Monica & Me workroom: a quick press with a medium-heat iron brings the scallops, and any monogramming, back into crisp, clean definition. It takes a few minutes and makes the difference between a bib that looks slightly tired after washing and one that looks as considered as the day it arrived.

What customers tell us after months of washing

We built these bibs to last, and it's customers who've told us, wash after wash, that they do. Reviewers on Trustpilot report that our bibs wash up amazingly, holding their shape and colour through repeated washing rather than fading or losing structure after a handful of cycles. One customer mentioned she was still using hers when her daughter turned two — well past the point most bibs would have been retired to the bin. Several others specifically call out how well the bibs look with any outfit, which matters for something that goes on and off several times a day and needs to suit whatever a baby happens to be wearing.

Why that makes the scalloped edge worth choosing

None of this is about the scalloped edge looking prettier than a plain rectangle, though we think it does. It's that the shape does a genuinely better job — sitting flat instead of bunching, covering more of the shoulders and lower chest for smaller babies — and it's cut from a fabric chosen to keep doing that job through hundreds of washes rather than a handful. A bib you're washing constantly and hoping to hand down to a second child, or keep as a keepsake, needs to earn that over time, not just on day one. That's the case for a scalloped bib over a plain one: better fit day to day, and durability built to match.

A couple more questions we get asked

Will the scallops lose their shape after lots of washing?

No — the fabric is chosen specifically to withstand repeated washing without the bib losing its shape, scallops included. If you ever want them looking extra crisp, a quick press with a medium-heat iron will bring the edges back into sharp definition.

Is a scalloped bib as practical as a regular bib for everyday mess, or is it more of a special-occasion style?

It's built for everyday use. The scalloped shape covers the same key areas — chest, shoulders, lower chest — as a regular bib, and the fabric is chosen to cope with daily washing, so there's no practicality trade-off for choosing the style with the better fit.

Curious about the fabric itself? We wrote about what makes Liberty of London Tana Lawn one of the fabrics behind our scalloped bibs, and why it's built to last. Best Liberty Print Gifts for Baby Showers & Newborns

The best Liberty print gifts for a baby shower or newborn are ones that work as a small starter wardrobe, not a single throwaway item. Our two most-gifted pieces are the Eloise Set — classic pink, blue and green ditsy florals that go with any outfit — and the Rainbow Set, seven coordinated bibs for seven days. Past those two, the right pick depends less on a universal rule and more on the parent's taste and the occasion you're buying for — both covered below.

The two we recommend most

The Eloise Set — classic colours, goes with everything

The Eloise Set is our starter set in the classic colourway: pink, blue and green ditsy florals in Liberty print, on our signature scalloped edge. It's the set we point people to when they want something safe and versatile — a gift that will suit almost any nursery, any outfit, any taste. If you don't know the parents well, or you know they lean towards classic over bold, this is the one.

The Rainbow Set — "7 bibs for 7 days"

The Rainbow Set is a complete starter pack of seven Liberty print bibs, one for every day of the week — a baby's first capsule wardrobe, but in bibs. It's the set for a parent who loves colour and pattern rather than sticking to neutrals, and it works well as a single generous gift rather than something you'd need to pair with anything else.

How to match the gift to the parent, not a rule

There isn't one print or colourway that suits every new parent, and we'd rather say that honestly than pretend there's a single "best" gift. Some parents love the classic pink, green and blue ditsy florals. Some want bold, colourful prints on every bib. Some are firmly in neutral, earthy tones, and some want only white and cream, nothing printed at all.

If you know the parent well enough to have an opinion on their taste, buy for that — it matters more than buying the "safest" option. And it doesn't always have to be a busy print to feel special. A texture or a tone-on-tone embroidery can make a gift feel just as considered, sometimes more so, for parents who've told you they want to keep things quiet and understated.

Baby shower or newborn visit? The occasion changes the gift

A baby shower or a christening tends to call for a larger gift, or one that's more impressively wrapped — you're often one of several people giving something, and a full bib set arriving in a keepsake gift box reads as generous without any extra effort on your part.

Meeting the baby for the first time, on the other hand, usually calls for something smaller and more personal. A single personalised bib for the baby's keepsake box tends to suit that visit better than a full set — it's a gift about that baby specifically, not a general newborn gift.

FAQ

What's the difference between the Eloise Set and the Rainbow Set?

The Eloise Set is three bibs in classic pink, blue and green ditsy florals, built to match any outfit. The Rainbow Set is seven bibs, one for every day of the week, for a parent who loves colour and pattern rather than sticking to a classic palette.

Should I buy a bigger gift for a baby shower or a smaller one for a newborn visit?

Generally, yes. Baby showers and christenings suit a larger, more generously wrapped gift, like a full bib set in a keepsake gift box. A newborn visit suits something smaller and more personal, like a single personalised bib.
